Kelmscott Press--Burne-Jones, Edward--Catterson-Smith, Robert COLLECTION OF SMALL SKETCHES COMPRISING CLARIFICATION OR PROPOSED REVISIONS OF DESIGNS, ETC. ink, pencil, gouache sketches on paper and tracing paper (together with one envelope), various sizes, a number with notes by Robert Catterson-Smith ("E. B-Jones Jun ’94", "Drawn by Sir EB-J", "E. Burne-Jones June ’94", "EBJ 10 July 96") or by Edward Burne-Jones ("the 2nd must be in a kind of perspective if you come tomorrow come early"), some spotting and browning, occasional pin holes, occasional creases It appears that this small collection of fourteen pieces comprises sketches MOSTLY IN THE HAND OF BURNE-JONES. They were intended to provide Robert Catterson-Smith with additional detail or to suggest a proposed method in rendering the rough Burne-Jones designs into finished drawings. They provide a fascinating stage in the artistic process and, given the attribution notes by Catterson-Smith, demonstrate a rather touching respect shown by Catterson-Smith to Burne-Jones.
