The inscription on the drawing refers to Perseus and Andromeda of 1876 (Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide) a composition later re-imagined as two canvases The Rock of Doom and The Doom Fulfilled (Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart and full-scale cartoons at Southampton City Art Gallery). Inscribed in error as for the sixth picture in the Perseus Series, this head is a variant study for Perseus in The Rock of Doom bur may also relate to Perseus in The Finding of Medusa as the gaze, so important on Burne-Jones' work has a slightly different character. The position of both shoulders and the gaze corresponds to that in the paintings held in Southampton Art Gallery and Stuttgart StaatsGallerie.
