This drawing relates to J.W. Mackail's 1892 project Biblia Innocentium: being the story of God's chosen people before the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ upon the earth, written anew for children, which was published by the Kelmscott Press. Mackail, who was Burne-Jones’s son-in-law, planned upwards of 200 illustrations for the book, although they were never completed and the book was published without images. 25 of the designs which were sufficiently advanced were reproduced as woodcuts by Robert Catterson-Smith and published by Longman’s in 1902. This study does not relate to one of the published designs.
