Lanercost Priory was founded in 1169 as an Augustinian House of Prayer and suffered in the Border Wars. It was built with stones from nearby Hadrian's Wall. During 1306-07, Edward I stayed in Lanercost. Having the Privy Seal here signified that England was ruled from Lanercost for almost 6 months. The Monastic House was closed in 1538 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The north aisle of the Priory became the parish church. To accommodate more worshippers the nave was re-roofed and glazed in the 18th century. In the late 19th century George Howard, the 9th Earl of Carlisle, a philanthropist and artist, commissioned extensive work by leading Arts and Crafts designers, including Edward Burne-Jones and Charles Ferguson. This included a beautiful woollen embroidery (the Dossal) designed specifically for the Priory by William Morris.
