Painted in 1893 as part of a diptych on either side of the painting The Morning of the Resurrection, 1882-6. This was originally as an Altarpiece below the large stained glass window, The Woman of Samaria, designed by Burne-Jones for the church. Mainly a studio work, sold off by the Church and the two panels have been separated, the other panel of the Virgin was owned by The Pre-Raphaelite Trust ( Julian Hartnoll) in 1987.
