Originally a design for the stained glass window (BMAG 1920P77) and afterwards painted over in watercolours, but left unfinished. The design was also copied with the addition of two ravens, for a window in the south aisle of Meole Brace Church (1893). Burne-Jones often converted his cartoons for other purposes, as here, where he completed the design as a large independent watercolour. It was purchased at Burne-Jones's Studio sale in 1898 after his death.
