Mary was the daughter of Lucas Alexander Ionides (1837 - 1924) who was a friend of the artist and whose father Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810 -1890) was a patron of the Pre-Raphaelites (see family portrait in Watts Gallery acquired in 2005). She married firstly the American Benjamin Houghton Dowson on 8th October 1895 and had a daughter Mary Euphrosyne (1896-1908) who died at age 11. She later married the son of the sculptor Thomas Woolner, Hugh, also as his second marriage, on 13th August 1912. They had one son Alexander 'Sandy' (b. 1914) who married Diana Helen Firth (1908 - 1999), the person who gave Bradley Manor to the Trust in 1938. She died in Newton Abbott.
