An admirer from the days of his friendship with Rossetti, Durer was a strong influence on Burne-Jones's early pen and ink drawings. It is unknown if Burne-Jones was aware of the drawing by Durer of Six Pillows, (Metropolitain Museum of Art, New York Acc. no 1975.1.862) as its provenance is not complete, but its being in the Lubomirski Museum, Ossolinkski Nationalinstitut, Lviv, after 1868 indicates that it is most probable that photographs or reproductions were available. The similarities between the drawing by Durer and Burne-Jones studies is more than a coincidence.
