The chest tomb is made from Portland stone, with a copper roof, and is covered with floral copper work. The wrought iron railings that surround it are topped with ornate lilies. It’s the only tomb created by Burne-Jones.
William Waters has pointed out that Burne-Jones was very accurate when sketching for a work and that the leaves are of a different plant in the sketch, to those on the tomb. I agree with that, but think the arabesques in the Secret Book drawing have some relevance to the final Leyland design.
