This unfinished painting was on the easel in Burne-Jones's studio on the day he died and was the last work to engage his attention.
The drawing is in fact seen on the easel in Ambrose Poynter's watercolour of the artist's studio at the time of his death (no. 377), and it may have been the last thing he worked on.
