Inscribed on scroll across the top ""The Adoration" designed by Sir E. Burne-Jones and executed by Morris and Company at Merton Abbey in Surrey England." Christopher Menz writes "After seeing the series of the Holy Grail tapestries by Morris & Co. on display at the British Pavilion of the 1900 Paris international Exhibition, the South Australian George Brookman visited Merton Abbey... According to Brookman, "after a great deal of persuasion he induced Morris and Company to accept a commission... and then only on the condition that is was for Australia. Four men wove the Adelaide version of the tapestry on and off for two years. One weaver died during this time, causing a delay." A weaver John Keich, died during the weaving. "This version was woven by Robert Ellis, John Keich, John Martin and Walter Talyor. The delay (caused by Keich's death) in the weaving irritated Brookman as he had to pay £144 duty on the tapestry due to a change in tariffs in 1902. the tapestry arrived in Adelaide in 1902 and was displayed at the Unley Town Hall... In 1917 Brookman sold The Adoration the the then National Gallery of South Australia for £550, which was almost certainly the purchase price. Whne Brookman owned The Adoration of the Magi and his other Morris & Co. tapestry David instructing Solomon in the Building of the Temple, which he purchased in 1903, they would have hung in his house Ivanhoe in Edwin Terrace, Gilberton."
