This is one of the most sensitive of the portraits of famous men of his time painted by Watts. It was shown at the Royal Academy in 1870 and again at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 when Burne-Jones's own work made a sensation. Watts gave it to Lady Burne-Jones, who bequeathed it to Birmingham, 1920.
