[Poppies.] ... Did you ever see a black poppy - as handsome and terrible as lucifer when the light he carried went out. I saw a garden of them once at the end of a summer evening and shall never forget. I suppose they are hard to rear; I have seen a few. The poison poppy is white and sweet to look at; it looks the least harmful of all made things.One could distrust sooner a lily than the fragile flower of the white poppy. ...
