Burne-Jones became the Firm’s leading designer of stained glass during the 1870s. This is his drawing for one of four panels telling the story of the annunciation, the birth of Christ, the adoration of the magi and the flight into Egypt. They were commissioned from the Firm for the chapel at Castle Howard, the magnificent Yorkshire country house used as the setting for the 1980s TV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited. They are still in situ today. Burne-Jones shows the Virgin Mary on the right, her head meekly lowered as the first of the three wise men offers his gift. The colouring of the glass in the actual window differs slightly from this design: Mary and the first king are draped in white, while the black king’s robes are a glowing orange and their crowns a bright gleaming gold.
