St. Matthew, seated beside a box, holds an inkwell in one hand and a quill in the other. A large book lays open on his lap. His head is turned to the right and behind him is an angel carrying an unfurled scroll. St. Matthew appears to be listening to the angel. The saint has a halo behind his head.
A drawing of the figure of St. Matthew the Evangelist as he appears in the stained glass west window of All Hallows Church, Allerton installed in 1876 ( originally designed by Burne-Jones for Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge in 1873). Allerton being located 3 miles from Liverpool, it is likely that the Warrington studio made the copy at this location possibly c. 1888.
