The entry for the drawing in the Burlington Fine Arts Club exhibition catalogue of 1899 cat no 16, claims that this drawing is "An occasional study, from a drawing in the possession of Mr. C. Fairfax Murray, executed probably in 1870 for the Winter Exhibition of the Old Water Colour Society." There is no similar drawing exhibited in the Winter of 1870. There is a possibility that the drawing is a variant study for the cartoon for the east Window of St. Mary’s Church, Nun Monkton of The Virgin with St. Anne, (left light) and cartoon may have been reversed to complement the Virgin and Child in the right hand light. If this is correct then the date of the drawing is c.1872. A version in chalk on brown paper is held in the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery no. 1927P587 (Study of Two Seated Figures - a Seated Female with her right arm round the neck of a child on her right ).
In water colours, white on blue ground. Signed E.B.J. An occassional study, from a drawing in the possession of Mr. C. Fairfax Murray, executed probably in 1870 for the Winter Exhibition of the Old Water Colour Society.
