A composition with similarities to Hymenaeus, Love disguised as Reason and the woodcut illustrations to Cupid and Psyche. Burne-Jones visited Florence in 1859 and had the opportunity of seeing the sculptural reliefs on the cantoria by Luca Della Robbia in Florence cathedral in situ. They were popularly reproduced photographically in the nineteenth century. The figures singing and playing a zithern show a debt to the girls playing similar instruments in the relief. His admiration for Della Robbia is evident from sketches made from The Seasons and other reliefs held at the South Kensington Museum (Sketchbook V&A E.4. 1955) dating from 1865-67. The majority of the present work is from the hand of a studio assistant, attributed to T M Rooke, with over painting in white by the Master.
