One of a "few" blocks for the Story of Cupid and Psyche which are, according to George Warlde's account, "given at first to 'the trade' to be cut but the result was so unsatisfactory that Morris tried to get the cutting done by un- professional hands." It is not clear how many blocks were sent to be engraved in this way but this print shows the only image known to have survived from this experiment. Representing Pan before Psyche, it is signed in the block by the trade engraver Joseph Swain, best known for providing the engravings for Punch between 1844 and 1900. This print matches the only other known copy in the Morgan.
