The figure of a somnolent girl was of interest to Burne-Jones from an early date. She appears in a primitive form in the fourth of The Sleeping Beauty tile series and in Ladies and Death (1860) where a girl is sleeping with her head on her friend's lap: themes which later recur in a varied form reaching their apogee in the Briar Rose Series of the late 1880s.
