Possibly a variant study for the figure of Love, the last of the series in "Fortune, Fame, Oblivion, Love". In this study the eyes are closed, Burne-Jones was often undecided whether Love should be portrayed blindfolded, eyes closed or eyes open. The oil versions of this figure (Christie's 2008, 1871 and Birmingham City Art Gallery, 1872) show him holding a bow and raising his right hand to take an arrow from a quiver on his back, in the present drawing the detail shows him holding what is probably the bow in his left hand, and his right hand is moving to his right shoulder as it is in both oil versions. The separate study of the left hand is different from that as it is posed in "Fortune, Fame, Oblivion, Love" but is closer to the pose of the left hand in the larger version in the Birmingham collections.
