Friday, January22nd., 1897 ... Only a day or so ago I came the autotype of his "Chaucer's Dream of Fair Women" (190) came to hand. This as I understand it, is the picture you own, and that you offered to sell me for 325 Guineas, (was that not the price?) My wife insists that I shall not buy any more pictures without seeing them - but I confess that this tempts me, - only that I am, as I wrote you some time ago, feeling awfully poor, and having a lot of expenses still staring me in the face on a/c of the houses I am building, and are not yet unfinished. I am hoping that before this year of Grace goes out, that I may be in a different humor about picture buying, and buying other things, too, - but just now I am trying to keep near shore, and out of debt, (and danger).
