An album of slight drawings made 1858-59, while Burne-Jones was staying with the Princeps at Little Holland House in Kensington. Burne-Jones had been taken there during a very hot Summer when he was seriously unwell. During this time he developed an intimacy with Sophia Dalrymple and the series of monograms record his preoccupation with her. At the time he was recommended not to paint in oil as it would upset his constitution, a book of drawings in pen and ink, that he made whilst staying at little Holland House survives, revealing a closeness to Sophia and also contains his own monogram made into the form of a flower. The three drawings in pencil may relate to his recent experience designing for stained glass made at the Powell & Company manufactory. Sophia was fascinated by the artists she knew and created albums of any drawings and scraps she was given.
