Across the criticism Burne-Jones makes wry commentaries on the critic's observations and selections of verse, for example: Morris is caricatured as gazing at the earth seen from behind alongside the quotation "Watching the dark night hides a gloomy earth" and he portrays Morris as St Sebastian against Austin's against Austin's comment "the serene martyr of a mean and melancholy time". Morris is known t have sent reviews of his poetry to Janey, it is possible therefore that this extract from Temple Bar was sent to her and Burne-Jones decorated it for her amusement.
