Here's another etching from the Gazette des Beaux Arts, the leading French art publication which published etchings of old and contemporary masterworks. The Gazette employed some of the best etchers for their publication. Here we have Felix Jasinski (1862-1901) rendering a wonderful version of Burne-Jones's painting PERSEUS AND THE GRAIAE. Burne-Jones made this painting in 1892 and, true to form, the Gazette was one of the first to offer an etched version (in 1893). I think Jasinski did a marvelous job of translating Burne-Jones's haunting picture into etched form. The sharp lines and clear delineation of figures mimic the original's. The etched version, of course, would be how most art lovers would be able to experience the piece, unless they could travel to the museum where the original painting was exhibited. The title of the piece (in French) appears below the image: PERSEE ET LES SOEURS DES GORGONES. Below the image on the left appears; Burne-Jones pinx. (Burne-Jones painted this). Below the image on the right appears: F. Jasinski sc. (F. Jasinski etched this). Also appearing in print is the name of the journal: Gazette des Beaux Arts and the printer: Imp. Ch. Wittmann. (I've included many close up photos of the piece so you can judge it for yourself.). The image is in excellent condition. There is some very light discoloration of the paper on the very top of the sheet, far from the image. The plate measures 6 1/4 inches x 6 1/4 inches. The sheet measures 11 inches x 7 1/2 inches. A wonderful etched version of a Burne-Jones masterpiece. Free shipping in the U.S. Outside the U.S., shipping cost depends on destination and size of parcel.
