Written to Kipling on his election to the Athenaeum in 1897. Burne-Jones had been elected in 1879 under Rule 2, which provides for the election of distinguished people, an interesting reflection on his success at the Grosvenor Gallery. Caricatures of the bishop members occur in many of his letters.
Dear Ruddy [Rudyard Kipling] I heard last night that you were elected to the Athenaeum — of course you were — and I am ready at any moment to take you there & make you familiar with it, its dining room, its library and librarian, and if I might add ... / its offices - the latter / will amaze you - & you / will know more of the / inner life of bishops / there is a hundred / biographies of them. / [drawing of three standing bishops] / and so on / [page of 5 seated bishops] . . . the little drawing whereof I spoke, I will choose and send in a day or two.
