Probably dating from 1858: compare the motive on the shield with that on the pennon in no. 12 [Burne-Jones, The paintings, graphic and decorative work ... exhibition 1975]. The figures are too indistinct to suggest a subject. One seems to be kneeling to the left, two more standing behind the pole and shield. It was evidently Burne-Jones's practice to draw figures last in these early pen and ink designs (see also no. 19).
