Sep: 19: 1895 Sweet Mary, / Your young / travellers arrived last / evening in good condition, / and we had a happy, / peaceful supper, and they / went soon to bed and / slept well. It was so / nice that Guy was able / to come for the night. This morning Fräulein took / them both to Mrs. Stanford's / & they went at once with / the other boys / to the sea, & saw / some of them bathe, and / so the parting came / naturally enough by Guy's / returning to school with / his comrades and Ego's / coming back here with / Fräulein. I had a nice / quiet hour with him / after this, and he talk- / ed to me about his own / school from time to time / - saying that he did not / like it - but I thought with / a fair amount of spirit about / it. Poor man, he does not / like to leave home. "I wish / Mama would keep a school" / he said with a twinkle in / his eye - and we laughed / together. I came upon no / trace of what seemed to / me like any definite trouble / that he has there, and I / asked him several things / which would have given me / a clue to any. For instance, / speaking of his being the / elder brother I said that / he would be able to give / Guy some advice, and to / tell him what to beware / of in school life - he has / done so? He said 'yes / in an easy manner, as / if there were no special / bugbear in his memory. / Casually too he mentioned / that some of the most bul- / lying boys were leaving / this term, and that things / were better than they used to / be. And it comforted me / when I said 'are you hap- / py at night in your / bedroom - there's no / trouble there?' that he / answered heartily 'O no / I'm all right there!' When first he came, he look- / ed sad and pre-occupied, but / this morning that / changed, and he seemed / much better. I think he / looks the delicate one / now, and Guy the strong / one. Guy appeared quite / cheerful, and ready for / the adventure before him. / I shall be down here till / the end of the month I ex- / pect, and then again / for a day or two in / the middle of October/ so that I shall be able / to send you word about / the dear little fel- / low. There is a / very nice, kind family / here, named Ridsdale (one / of the two girls married / my nephew Stanley Bald- / win) who understand boys / like them, and I intro / duced them, & your boys to each other. / Ego came back from Mr. / Stanford's saying he felt / that he knew all the / boys there already! / He sent his "best love / to all," and departed / at 2.30. this afternoon / with the best of Fräulein / in apparently excellent / spirits. Angela much / enjoyed the brief visit of / the boys, and I wished / for Cynthia too! / And now goodbye for / to day, my beloved girl, / I am ever / your devoted friend / Georgie
