Made c. 1870 although Burne Jones work list states " Many designs for Love is Enough" in 1872. From the style of the drawing and the fact that Love is Enough by Morris, was published in 1872, for which this was the frontispiece, would suggest that it was made earlier. The emotive title, together with the fact that the relationship of the lovers is being consecrated, relates to the artist's own situation regarding his relationship with Zambaco, added to this, the event recorded does not exist in Morris' poem. It's significance is borne out by the fact that the artist enlarged the design into a full size painting (Tate 3452 see relevant entry). The drawing was again used in 1897 for the Kelmscott edition.
