It is closely based on a drawing, in the same direction and approximate size in black chalk acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney in 1990 (154.1990; 204 x 173 mm). The drawing dates from about 1866, and is a study for the head of Saint George and is related to the painting 'Saint George Kills the Dragon' also in Sydney's collection. The British Museum has a related graphite drawing of the whole composition (P&D 1954,0508.13).
