Murray Marks commissioned the large watercolour version of "Caritias" from T M Rooke, based upon Burne-Jones's stained glass window design made for the Old West Kirk, Greenock c.1868. It was on behalf of his client Frederick Startridge Ellis, who eventually purchased the painting for £200 in 1871 upon completion. This small watercolour was in Murray Marks's collection, possibly given as acknowledgment of the service Marks had performed for the artist. T M Rooke applied to M,M,F & Co in 1869 for a post in their workshops and was given a situation in Burne-Jones's studio, the influence of the Master was extremely powerful and can be seen in the comparison between Rooke's "Castitias" and the present watercolor, which was probably one of his first assignments.
