Towards the end of his life Burne-Jones exhibited with the intention to sell, a number of his drawings. There were 148 of them exhibited in 1896 at the Fine Art Society and Burne-Jones added signatures and dates to make them more saleable. In so doing with some of the drawings there appears to have been a lapse of memory and incorrect dating occurred in the less specific drawings. The present drawing would seem to be an example. Stylistically the technique of drawing is allied to that of c.1873-75, and not 1870 as the initials and dating indicate. Supporting this theory is the drawing's similarity to the face of one of the Nereids in The Arming of Perseus (Perseus Series) begun c.1873.
