It is interesting to note that the date of this sketchbook is concurrent with the founding and early days of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Company. Burne-Jones was researching the techniques used in medieval craftsmanship. The stylized daisy at the top of the page became a favourite motif for both Burne-Jones and Morris and it occurs in their embroidery and stained glass of this period (see base Dido and Cleopatra cartoon).
