A drawing after an illustration in Pietro Andrea Mattioli's Commentarii in libros sex Dioscoridis of 1554, identified as "Acathium". Today the Cotton thistle or Scotch thistle has been re-named Onopordum acanthium. The plant was used as one of the flowers behind Chaucer in Chaucer's Dream of Good Women (cartoon held in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery).
