This drawing is an intermediate stage of the development of the first painting The Heart Desires from the Pygmalion first series. The artist has retained but subtly changed the figure of Pygmalion from that in the woodcut drawing held in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery Acc. no 1927P612, but has refined the lines ans substituted a female for the the man holding a club in the background.
