Oct 20th. 1893. / dear Mr. Spielmann, / apropos of that / foolish and meaningless letter which / I hear Goupil are sending round / to the papers, 'warning' them not / to further allude to the destruction / of my Father's picture (the affair / is no more 'sub judice' than / you or I are!) wouldn't it / be possible to publish a / note to this effect / "We have received a communication / from Mssrs Boussard, Valadon's solicitors, cautioning us against / referring to their destruction / of Mr. Burne-Jones "Love Among / the Ruins" while the negotiations / with regard to / damages etc are still / impending. We shall be / happy to avoid all / allusion to this affair / until the matter is finally / settled" - or words / to that effect. / This wld. be an incidious / way of publishing their / name (which has not yet been / done in England) - & I / don't think any libel / wd. attach to such a / paragraph. / They had no business to / send that letter round - / as the matter is only / being privately negotiated - / & is in no sense " sub / judice"! / I have made arrangements / for their name to be / published in Paris & / Belgium - where / the law of libel is not so / foolishly stringent as it is / here. / I am distressed to hear you / have been obliged to go / abroad because of Mrs. Spielmann's health - & / trust that it will / soon be completely / restored by the rest & / change. / Believe me, / Yours very truly / Philip Burne-Jones.
