Fitzwilliam Account Book 1863 July 26 Set of subjects for Tiles 'Beauty & Beast. 6 (£)do. figure 2 extra. 2(£) In the past there has been some confusion between this pair of tiles, which is an annex to the story of Beauty and the Beast made for The Hill. Whitley, and the entry in the Fitzwilliam Account book which contains in the entry for 1861 "King and Queen 1 (£)". This refers to the cartoon now in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland and was for an unlocated stained glass window. The illustrations included here vary owning to some minor restoration, but they can be identified as being the same through the irregularities in the glaze painting being identical. The exceptional quality of the painting indicates that they were either painted by Burne-Jones and Morris themselves or a superior artist active in the workshop.
