A much more elaborate design than number 228 [1975 Burne-Jones cat], presumably made at an early stage before the general scheme was settled. Another drawing related to this composition belonged to the late Pfofessor TSR Boase, and a fourth was sold at Christie's, 22 january 1974, lot 79.
The pencil drawing of a knight on horseback holding a lance with a flag from Sketchbook 54, Byzantine and Romanesque Decoration - One-hundred and ten (110) sketches of Medieval and Byzantine Decoration, Costume, Armour, etc., Made in connection with studies for The Holy Grail Tapestries for Morris & Co. held in Birmingham City Art Gallery. A possible source for this pastel. The drawing is obviously after the work of another artist but the original work that Burne-Jones was studying is as yet is unknown.
