William Morris became interested in tapestry weaving in 1879 and wove an experimental piece "Vine and Acanthus". Subsequently verdures were woven which depicted deer amongst foliage but these were executed from designs by J H Dearle, however in their early discussions Morris and Burne-Jones probably pre-empted Dearle and Burne-Jones was prompted to make studies of deer in their natural environment.
