From 1835 to c. 1895 it was owned by Dr. Louis-Maximien Rey, Bordeaux (1835–at least 1895, acquired as gift from a nun) and as yet it is unknown how Burne-Jones came to copy this image in the Wightwick Manor sketchbook NT 1288046. Burne-Jones recalled this image in 1896 whilst desiging the figure of Liberty for the west window, Manchester College, Oxford.
