This design is for the right hand light of a three-light window for the Abbey Church of St. Mary the Virgin at Margam, Glamorgan, in 1873; the design, which is inscribed upper right with the Morris & Company serial number, was not reused in Burne-Jones's lifetime. Burne-Jones's autograph work record, now at the Fitzwilliam Museum, often contains little witticisms, testimony to the artist's sense of humour; he refers to this cartoon in his entry for 8 September 1873 - 'Margam: St. David of collossal size and excellence - entirely priceless - I make no charge for the genius displayed in this work, but for the trouble of lifting the cartoon about during the work £15'.
