With 690a this design was for part of the East window at Lyndhurst, Hants. In Burne-Jones' account book (Fitzwilliam Museum) payments for designs for Lyndhurst appear between August 1862 and November 1864. Bell (Edward Burne-Jones, 1892, p. 112) refers to 'Angel and man' and 'Angel and woman' as designs for Lyndhurst made in 1863. A.C. Sewter, in a letter to the Museum (14 November 1970) specifies the month of February, and refers to the account book, in which there appears, under February 2nd: 'Angel & wench for (?) Lyndhurst £4.5.0. / Do. & cove for do 4.5.0. It is with the second of these entries that the present drawing can be identified.
