There is perhaps a significance in this drawing beyond its rough appearance as it would seem to introduce a period in the art of Burne-Jones in which the complexity of the draperies and bindings is increased. Earlier the figures were clothed in simply falling folds from the shoulders or the waist, after c.1872, draperies other than simple clothing are introduced, that both emphasize and disguise the modelling of the body. Aglaia, Maria Zambaco's cousin, it would appear from the inclusion of this drawing in the album, had some part in this development. Burne-Jones greatly respected her taste and experience in the use of fabrics.
