This interesting watercolour drawing gives an insight into the working methods of the later studio. Substantially by a studio assistant in brown wash, which has been over worked by the Master. The head of the sleeping girl on the right is taken from a study, which the artist then re-thought and trans-located it to the head of a sleeping attendant (far left) in the Buscott Park version of The Garden Court. The purpose of this watercolour was to consider the introduction of the casket to the composition, but it reveals how Burne-Jones, in this example, created a head study which was introduced elsewhere as the poses were similar. Burne-Jones was canny enough regarding commercial potential, so that in finishing the study it became more attractive and thus a saleable object. Regarding it's position in the evolution of the series, it lies between the painting in Dublin and the series at Buscott.
