Failing an exact correspondence it is suggested here that the figure could be a variant for Pygmalion meditating in the rejected illustrations for the story in The Earthly Paradise. The approximate date can be ascertained from the style of the drawing placing it as being created c. 1867. A set of pencil drawings on tracing paper are held in the collection of Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery, acc. nos. 1927P614 and 1927P617 depict Pygmalion meditating allowing the possibility that this drawing was a further variant.
