Made at the same sitting as a pencil drawing of Fanny Cornforth (Victoria and Albert Museum Acc no E.2843-1927) wearing her hair in a snood, relates to the watercolour Viridis of Milan of 1861. Paintings made by Rossetti of Fanny at this date, Fair Rosamond (1861) and Bocca Bacciata (1859), support the the identification of the model her and Rossetti's influence also inspired a Venetian Renaissance source.
