The Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. manifesto included all types of mural decoration, although not mentioned, tiles became a regular production and Burne-Jones was commissioned from 1861 onwards for tile designs. Birket Foster had commissioned the decoration of his house and this included illustrations of fairy tales, one of which was for ten designs for The Story of Cinderella. The tale captivated Burne-Jones's imagination and resulted ultimately in the painting of 1863. The present drawing would seem to be mid-way between the tiles depicting Cinderella as a Kitchen maid and a Princess and the watercolour.
