The Helmet is discussed and illustrated by Aylmer Vallance (p. 26 and fig. 46) [Aylmer Vallance, The Decorative Art of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Baronet. Easter Number of The Art Journal, London, 1900].It may be the same as that mentioned in a letter to Philip Burne-Jones, c.1875, quoted in memorialsII, p.61 - "All evening your Mama and I have been shaping a cap for Perseus ..." Burne-Jones' aim in making his own properties is worth noting:: "One of the hardest things to determine is how much realism is allowable in any particular picture ... I make what I want, or a model of it, and then make studies from that. What eventually gets onto the canvas is a reflection of a reflection of something purely imaganitive."
