The legend of Hero and Leander is mentioned in the prologue to Chaucer's Legend of Good Women and in the introduction to the Man of Law's tale. Hero stands holding a torch to light the way or Leander who is swimming below in the Hellespond. This is the first illustration of the story and does not relate to the later illustration to the Kelmscott Chaucer of c.1895.
