Some info on the Burne Jones Rose Window. This is described in a history monograph written by the College Archivist Malcolm Cole in 1985, who had no knowledge at that time of its fate. In fact the window is installed in the Community Church of Syosset, New York. It was only in 2007 that the College discovered that the window had survived. Whitelands moved to purpose-built buildings in Putney in 1930/1 and, while most of the chapel’s stained glass was rehoused in the new chapel, the architect Sir Gilbert Scott did not want a round window in his Romanesque design. The Chelsea site was subsequently demolished in the late 1930s so we suspect the window was purchased for architectural salvage and from there made its way to the USA. The story from relatives is that Elizabeth Williams (nee Nichols) Taylor donated the window to the church in honor of her late son Pemberton. The window was apparently brought to the US by a Margaret Skinner who sold it to Elizabeth circa 1944. The window travelled with Elizabeth to Long Island and was stored in their home until she donated it in 1951 to the church.
