The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus Series: The Amazon Frieze Marble slab of the Amazon frieze of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. It represents combats between Greeks and Amazons. This slab shows three figures, a Greek and two Amazons, a horse and a part of an Amazon’s leg. On the left an Amazon, mounted backwards on her horse, which rears up, was shooting to the left with a bow, presumably at a Greek on the previous slab, slab 1014. She wears a chiton belted at the waist and open on the left from the hip downwards, exposing her left thigh. She wore a helmet or hat with flaps. To the right a Greek shrinks back from the attack of an Amazon. The Greek, nude apart from an Attic helmet with long crest, is leaning backwards to the left to avoid the attack of an Amazon. In his right hand he probably held a sword. The Amazon tries to push the Greek’s shield aside in order to strike him with the axe that she was holding in her right hand. She wears a chiton, split at the left knee and belted at the waist, and a chlamys. Her hair waves back. Metal reins were inserted in drill-holes; the weapons were attached in metal, carved or may have been painted. Slab 1015 is part of a sequence that continues on slabs 1013 and 1014.
